Somehow, the driver lived and nobody on the train was hurt.

Gonna guess he has a sore neck.  And sore ears from being reamed out.

That was bad. Not paying attention either to the flashing light (signal looks high enough that I don’t think it would have been obscured by the other van that went through the warning signal) or for that matter, to his side view mirror where he could probably see the train coming.

And here I thought the first guy was dumb for going through the signal (he could probably see that he had time, but why risk it, especially on a commuter line with a fast two car train, rather than some slow moving mile-long freight train).

If only there were some flashing lights or ringing bells to warn people that a train was coming.

I’ve found that if I’m focused on one concern, in this case the first  van that’s turning and almost in my way, it’s easy to not notice another potential problem.

In other words, I think this is an understandable mistake. We’re bad at multitasking.

(Update: I’m also surprised the train wasn’t required to use its horn while approaching a crossing, especially one where the first van had already shown a remarkable level of stupidity.)

I blame it on the absence of old-fashioned wigwags.

Must be a crossing on a really small side road. Anything remotely major would h ave barriers.

And speed traps. I have been caught speeding only once in my life , and that was in Poland. Nevertheless, the cop was lenient, and I managed to talk down the fine from 300 PLN to 100.

Hooo, boy. We’ve got speed traps and speed cameras to spare. You may want to consider downloading a mobile app called Yanosik, it’s essentially the Polish Waze. It’ll warn you of patrols, speed cameras, accidents and whatnot. I’m fairly sure you can use it in English and it may very well save your arse.

Never seen or heard of such a thing in my life. Level crossings here have barriers.

Ignoring train crossing signals is a bad idea.   And it seems we have 2 crappy delivery van drivers who don’t seem to get that.

They were quite common in the US years ago - what with so many level crossings in rural areas being indistinct single lane affairs, in many cases it didn’t make sense to deploy a full barrier system. Even when a barrier was deployed, the wigwag would be switching on first - a more dynamic alternative to a flashing light. The wigwag has the advantage of catching the eye with motion even in bright sunlight, compared to a phased light, or at least I believe that was the idea. A moving light at night stands out quite well, and if the high intensity bulb doesn’t have to bear being switched on and off rapidly, lifespan is also good .

They’re now more or less a curiosity even here, but there was a time they were quite normal in many states.

A cool thing about youtube is that you can set the speed at 25% and see what happened. It almost broke the truck in half. Also I see the airbag deployed.
